Health Insurance Really is Affordable

The last thing you might want to be thinking about is health insurance. After all, you already have enough bills to pay right? While that may be true, if you do not have health insurance in place and you do something like break an ankle or wrist, do you have the close to $20,000 it will take to get it treated? Do you have the money on hand to pay the ER bill when it arrives?

Most Americans would answer no, as who has extra cash on hand these days? Most of the money they make goes to food and housing. If you do not have health insurance to defray medical expenses when you need it, you will not be able to take care of a mortgage and other big bills. This is not to scare you. This is the reality of living in a bad economy in the 21st century. You need health insurance or you could face bankruptcy.

Ever Wonder Who Prices Health Insurance?

You go to buy health insurance and do some checking around. You discover the same policy is available from many insurance companies, but the prices vary greatly. You find you can get a policy from company A for $300 a month, and yet the same policy can be purchased at company B for $225 a month. What is going on with that?

Competition is the reason. Insurance is a business and the bottom line is selling policies to consumers. If they need to price competitively to do that, then so be it. This is not to say that just because you might get that policy for $225 a month for a year, does not mean it will not be increased when the policy expiration date approaches. You have to watch things like this, and keep on top of your policy. Some people switch insurance every year to save money, if you do not mind changing insurance companies so frequently.

Health Insurance Companies Do Not Work Together!

One of the main reasons the health care system is in such a mess is that insurance companies do not work together. Instead they compete and undercut one another. There are way too many upper level executives running the system who do not seem to have the pulse of the people any more.

Health insurance should be about giving Americans access to health care they deserve. It should not be a competition for health care dollars at the expense of the consumers who need reliable and reasonably priced health insurance. However, what things should be and what they are in reality are two different things. Will health reform change that, if it actually stays in force? Who knows?

Health Insurance for the Future?

Does anyone know what health insurance will look like in the future? No, but that will not stop the debates about it. One thing is for certain – every citizen who pays taxes will take more than just a passing interest in how health insurance is going to shape up over time. And why wouldn’t they, as everyone needs health insurance or they face financial ruin if something bad happens.

It is a fact that our tax dollars keep the current health care system going. The sad part is when health care costs get so high that people cannot afford care or insurance. And this includes the people who may have been able to have some health insurance but cannot carry it any longer due to the recession. It is a conundrum without a solution at the moment.

The one thing that is certain though is that not having health insurance is not an option, despite how tight finances are. If you ever need medical care, and do not have health insurance, you will get slammed with a bill you likely cannot pay.

Health Insurance Debates Are Interesting But Not Always Fruitful

Any time you have been involved in a debate over the health reform act, do you come away feeling confused and frustrated? While everyone seems to have ideas, no one knows how to go about making any difference in the long term, and that is even in light of the passage of the health reform act. This does not bode well, does it?

We all know the current health system just isn’t cutting it and something has to give sooner or later. Is the answer making sure everyone has an e-medical file? Is the answer making everyone buy insurance or else they face a fine? The courts do not think so and ruled that it was unconstitutional. What do you think?

Health Insurance Rates Priced by Age

Older people do pay more for health insurance when compared to younger individuals.

This only makes sense as an older a person will need a health insurance plan that provides more coverage. It is just an annoying fact of life that the older the population gets, the more medical help they need.

Statistics show this fact and the cost of health insurance policies follows accordingly. In reality, the higher cost is not a punishment and makes sense when the big picture is examined. Another part of the bigger picture is the fact that many people do not take care of themselves, and they pay the price for that in increased health insurance premiums as they age.

The cost of providing health services to people neglecting their health is phenomenal. No wonder the American health system is in such a mess, and the cost of care is still skyrocketing.

The Dilemma of Employee Group Health Care Coverage

Before the end of the year, re-evaluate your health insurance. Not just personally, but if you happen to be an employer and offer group health coverage, it’s time to start checking that the plan still is a good fit for your team.

Near the end of the year it can be time to change what type of health insurance is offered to employees. Typically, workers are advised their particular plan is going up in price due to rising health costs. More affordable options can be offered. What people do not get is that employers are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to providing employee health insurance.

Every year the price of maintaining health insurance goes up. In fact, health expenses take up roughly 25 percent of a company’s operating costs. Workers asking for a raise will not see any difference in their paychecks to cover the increased costs as the increase goes to pay for the higher costs of health care.

It is a vicious cycle, and one that many employers are looking to break by not offering group coverage and moving to offering plans like Health Reimbursement Accounts.

January Means Changing Health Insurance Plans – Start Researching Now

Come January 2012 it will be time to revisit your health insurance coverage and make changes.

During the year things change rapidly when it comes to the price of drugs, their availability, their status (meaning generic versus brand name), and whether or not they are added or taken out of your drug regime. Various health insurance plans offered to consumers also change each year with new features coming in and others being changed or replaced.

Before January arrives and you find yourself with a health insurance that does not really suit your needs, do some in-depth evaluation of your coverage. You may find something else suits you better, particularly if you have changed employment, need different prescriptions, or have changed networks.

Stop Taxing the Health Care System

The resources in the American health care system are sadly limited. This is a fact and we read about it virtually every day. It is not getting any better either. The more we tax the resources of the system, the more it suffers in terms of physician burnout, increasing malpractice errors and out of control costs. We need to take responsibility for our own health care. Obviously, this is an ongoing problem of great magnitude.

You do not stay at home and suffer if you have pneumonia or something else that you know you will not go away without medical help. However, exercise discretion and be wiser about running to doctors for small things that burden the system and their availability for patients with more serious issues. You need your doctor to be there when you really need his or her expertise.

Know What Health Care Actually Costs

Knowing what you spend on medical bills is a real eye opener and may teach you a thing or two about being more prudent with our health care system bursting at the seams.

Say you have four children and take them to see a doctor for the sniffles. You are not aware of the costs because your co-pay is so low it does not matter. But what if you found out it cost about a $100 a visit for the doctor to consult each child? What if you were only there for three minutes and the doctor said, “You have a cold – rest, drink plenty of fluids and come back in a week.”

You would have spent $400 for something you could have done at home without further taxing the health system, which is really there for serious illness, not the sniffles.
